Clubs bidding to stay on course for dream Lord’s visit

TWO Gloucestershire clubs will on Sunday be bidding to reach the last 16 of the Voneus Village Cup which concludes with a dream final at Lord’s in September.

Dumbleton, the 2022 champions, booked their place in the first national round by winning the Worcestershire group and now travel to Llanelli, to face Dafen Welfare, of Dyfed.

It’s a huge day too for Aston Ingham who are into the last 32 for the first time in their history. The Gloucestershire County League club went through as champions of Herefordshire & Powys, and are now away to Pelsall, near Walsall.

Painswick are also through, as Gloucestershire champions, but their away match against Somerset winners Wembdon has been put back a week.

That’s because both clubs are in action on Sunday in the second stage of WEPL’s competition to find a qualifier for the ECB National Club T20.

Four area finals are due to take place, at Bedminster, Gloucester, Wembdon and Swindon.

Matches are straight knock out, with the four winners going into a grand finals day, at a venue to be announced, on July 14.

Bristol Group, at Bedminster CC – 10am: Bedminster v Twyford House; 1pm, Golden Hill v Bristol; 4pm final.

Gloucestershire Group, at Gloucester CC – 10am, Gloucester v Frocester; 1pm, Painswick v Tewkesbury; 4pm final.

Somerset Group, at Wembdon CC – 10am, Clevedon v Bridgwater; 1pm, Wembdon v Bath; 4pm final.

Wiltshire Group, at Swindon CC – 10am, Swindon v Potterne; 1pm, Bristol West Indian Phoenix v Chippenham; 4pm final.

GOLDEN Hill are out of the ECB National Club Championship following a seven-wicket home defeat against Penzance.

The Bristol side made an excellent start to this last 16 clash after losing the toss, Cyrus Shafi (81) and opener Jack Penn (60) taking the score to 127-1, only for the innings to fade to a total of 189-9.

Penzance then eased over the line with almost two overs to spare despite Dan Broome’s 2-37 from seven.

BRISTOL Pakistanis open their defence of the Stuart Canvas Gloucestershire Trophy with an away tie against Gloucester 2nds on Sunday.

Other ties: Apperley v Huntley, Bristol West Indian Phoenix 2nds v Kingsholm, Frenchay v Downend 2nds, Golden Hill 2nds v Gloucester AIW, Lydney v Stapleton, Pak Bristolians v Hawkesbury Upton, Quedgeley & Hardwicke v Bedminster 3rds.
