Gloucestershire Over 70s stay calm to close out one-run victory

GLOUCESTERSHIRE Over 70s held their nerve at the death to make it three from four this summer, completing a one-run home win over Wales at Apperley.

The visitors needed 32 from the last six overs but came up just short against Geoff Eaves whose final over cost six and meant he finished with fine figures of 0-28 from eight.

Graham Clarke grabbed 4-38, also from eight, while Mike Pearson held a return catch in the penultimate over to dismiss danger man Brian Skinner for 41.

Earlier, opener Keith Daniels (66), John Evans (38) and Dave Collinson (36) led Gloucestershire to their total of 197-8.

Gloucestershire Over 50s, meanwhile, suffered a 57-run reverse against Staffordshire at Westbury-on-Severn.

Sam Gunaratne (3-36 from nine) was the pick of the Gloucestershire attack as the visitors reached 215-6 which proved to be well out of reach despite Keith Knight’s late unbeaten 42 from just 28.

The 50s 2nds fared better, trumping Devon by 76 runs at Whitchurch where Ben Trotman (69) and James Seagrave (54) shone before skipper Dave Millard struck with 3-42.

And it was a good day too for the 50s 4ths who dispatched Cornwall by seven wickets at Stroud, Lee Pattison unbeaten on 93 from 78 (12 fours, two sixes).

Rain washed out the 60s as well as the 60s 2nds and 3rds.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE’S Richard Trotman will captain England in their first ever Over 50s international against Scotland on Sunday.

The game is being staged at Lansdown as part of the club’s bicentennial celebrations and starts at noon.
