Gloucestershire Over 70s fall to quarter-final defeat

HOLDERS Gloucestershire’s hopes of retaining their Over 70s national title came to an end with a 34-run home defeat at the quarter-final stage against last year’s beaten finalists Surrey.

The visitors piled up a challenging total of 307-3 after losing the toss at Fairford, and Gloucestershire then came up short despite the battling efforts of opener Keith Daniels (92 from 110) and skipper Roger Beese’s unbeaten 51 from 42.

The 60s’ 2nd XI, meanwhile, made it three from three in their Vase group with a 40-run home win at Long Ashton against Bedfordshire.

Andy Taylor top scored on 58 and Tim Smith struck 39 in a total of 240-9 after losing the toss.

And a fine bowling effort led by Dennis Mullings (2-23 from eight) along with Andy Kear (2-34 from nine) then ensured the visitors finished well short.

Gloucestershire Over 60s first team succumbed by three wickets away to Buckinghamshire despite being given a useful start by openers Rob Austen (74) and Ian Robson (56).

And Gloucestershire Over 60s 4ths lost by five wickets against Kent at Birdlip, opener Alec Robinson top scoring on 55.
