Kingsholm through in the Voneus Village Cup

KINGSHOLM powered into the next round of the Voneus Village Cup with a high scoring 46-run victory away to Cam.

The visitors, who lost the toss, piled up an imposing 292-4 from their 40 overs after making the most of a strong start from openers Ben Cowap (66) and Dominic Court (24).

Matt Cayless maintained the momentum with 71 from 86 balls while captain Rob Birch smashed 55 from 45 (four fours, three sixes) and there was a late flourish from James Boon whose unbeaten 34 off 21 included three maximums.

Cam, in reply, lost both openers cheaply before Ed Paddock (81 off 61, nine fours and three sixes) and captain Ryan Malpass (79) revived hopes with a stand of 137.

But both men fell to Sam Wheeler (4-51) while Court (4-20 from six) turned the screw to wrap up the win and book a Gloucestershire group quarter-final at home to Apperley on May 8.

On the same day, Marshfield will host Painswick, Frocester entertain Corse & Staunton and Rockhampton will welcome Gotherington.

This famous competition was launched in 1972 and each year attracts around 300 village sides from across the British Isles who battle it out for the chance to play in the final at Lord’s.
