Panchal shines as Bristol progress in ECB National Club Championship

RISHI Panchal captured 7-32 and followed up by top scoring on 39 as Bristol eased past Basingstoke & North Hants by three wickets to make progress in the ECB National Club Championship.

The WEPL side, who won the toss on the road, were on the back foot as the Hampshire club reached 106-1 in the 22nd over.

But Panchal broke the deadlock and then sparked a collapse from 183-4 to 198 all out with a fine seven-over spell, former Keynsham all-rounder Jake Carstens also capturing 2-26 with his off-spin.

Panchal and Shazil Mustafa (38) gave Bristol a useful start to their reply with an opening stand of 79 and although the visitors then slipped to 89-4, Jack Ellison (33) and George Harris (25 not) steadied the ship as victory was clinched with a ball to spare.

Bristol will now be away to St Cross Symondians who cruised past Royal Wootton Bassett by 172 runs.

Also through in Group Nine are Bishopston who dispatched Bedminster by 78 runs. Veteran Gary Booth plundered 75 from 50 (two fours, eight sixes) before falling victim to Jamie Brooks (5-24) as Bish totalled 227-7 after losing the top.

And it proved to be plenty as Bedminster came up short, Joe Baggaley Mott (3-33 from six) leading the charge. Bish will now be away to Bashley, who had a bye.

In Group Ten, Hatherley & Reddings defeated Cardiff by five wickets, Nemika Benthota’s patient unbeaten 78 from 104 the highlight as a target of 178 was chased down with more than two overs in hand.

Hatherley will now be away to Golden Hill, eight-wicket home victors against Exmouth who folded from a promising 153-2 to 204-9, Ahmed Syed capturing 4-26.

Opener Dan Phillips (63) and Jack Penn (61 not) then shone as a place in the next round was clinched with more than four overs to spare.

THREE wickets apiece for Tom Stevens and Olly Holland helped spur Langford to a 129-run home triumph over Kingston Bagpuize in the Oxfordshire group of the Voneus Village Cup.

The visitors were rushed out for just 78 by Stevens (3-17 from six) and Holland (3-26 from four) after opener Jake Romanek (66) had earlier top scored in Langford’s 207-7.

Langford will now be home to Cumnor in a group quarter-final on May 11.

In Gloucestershire, Marshfield rushed out Frocester for 94 ahead of sealing an emphatic six-wicket success while Painswick had a walkover against Apperley and Winterbourne pulled out of their trip to Bourton Vale.
