Foundation Coach

The entry level qualification for cricket coaching in England and Wales makes becoming a coach more accessible.

Coaching is an enormously rewarding, challenging and crucial role in cricket.

ECB Foundation Coach is a blend of e-learning and face-to-face modules led by ECB Coach Developers will explore what coaching looks like, the impact you can have as an ECB Foundation Coach, the skills you can help players to develop and how you can learn from your experiences.

By committing yourself to this programme and becoming a qualified coach you will become an important part of the ECB’s coaching family that works together to help players improve, have fun, be safe and learn at every stage of their development.

Programme Outcomes

This programme has been designed to develop a learner’s knowledge, skills and confidence to use icoachcricket to coach safe, fun and inclusive sessions that ignite a lifelong love of the game.

An ECB Foundation Coach will be qualified to lead coaching sessions independently and without supervision.

Who is it for?

Anyone aged 17 and over wishing to become qualified to coach cricket, inspire and develop players and make a difference to the game.

Experience of playing or coaching cricket is desirable but not essential when applying for this programme.

£150.00

Four face-to-face modules lasting three hours each, including three observed coaching opportunities, and typically delivered over two days.

Four bite-sized e-learning modules lasting 15-20 minutes each

Module 1 – Welcome to the family

  • Introduces the learner to the programme, providing an overview of its outcomes and expectations

Module 4 – Coaching fielding

  • Explores fielding and helps learners prepare for their turn to coach fielding during module 6

Module 7 – Coaching tools

  • Revisits the coaching tools after their demonstration and application during modules 5 and 6. Each coaching tool is explained followed by a scenario that explores their use when coaching catching relay

Module 10 – Taking wickets

  • What does coaching bowling look like?
  • Bowling foundations
  • Coaching bowling – your turn
  • Player welfare and safeguarding

Module 2 – Being an ECB Foundation I Coach

  • Explores how coaches can enhance players’ experiences and focuses on safety guidance using a variety of scenarios

Module 5 – Warming up

  • Role of an ECB Foundation I Coach
  • What does coaching look like?
  • Coaching – your turn
  • What is purposeful, active, safe and enjoyable coaching?
  • Coaching purposeful, active, safe and enjoyable – your turn

Module 8 – Coaching bowling

  • Explores bowling and helps learners prepare for their turn to coach bowling during module 10

Module 11 – Scoring runs

  • What does coaching batting look like?
  • Batting foundations
  • Coaching batting – your turn

Module 3 – icoachcricket

  • The key features are demonstrated and a scenario is used to develop the learner’s understanding of how to use the website and app during the programme and out in the field. This module also prepares learners for the first coaching opportunity in module 5

Module 6 – Wicket taking in the field

  • Introduction to the coaching tools
  • What does coaching fielding look like?
  • Fielding foundations
  • Coaching fielding – your turn
  • Differentiation and the STEP framework

Module 9 – Coaching batting

  • Explores batting and helps learners prepare for their turn to coach batting during module 11

Theresa Ellison / Administration Officer

Theresa’s role is to help and support others in the wider Gloucestershire Foundation team to ensure that the Foundation runs effectively and efficiently. Some of the key administrative areas are:

  • Helping to organise and set up the trials, winter nets programme and performance programme for the Girls and Boys Zonal squads
  • Keeping club contact details up to date including checking that each club’s Safeguarding Officer has valid qualifications and initiate and verify DBS applications for club volunteers
  • Administering online bookings including trials, winter nets programmes, Coach Development courses, holiday camps etc
  • Helping with many financial activities by creating invoices, payment of bills, chasing outstanding debtors etc
  • Help to create and run the office side of Coach Development

Theresa acts as the point of contact for many administrative parts of the Foundation.
