What is the GYCL North?

In our 2025–2028 Inspiring Gloucestershire strategy consultation, which received over 400 survey responses, the overwhelming priority identified by our stakeholders was to “provide opportunities so all young cricketers can access meaningful, competitive, organised cricket led, managed, and administered by the GCF.”

As a Foundation, we believe that bringing junior cricket under GCF management will help us engage more children and young people by ensuring they have access to high-quality, well-organised cricket, while also reducing fixture congestion for clubs through unified playing schedules. This presents a significant opportunity to deliver consistent and accessible junior cricket across the north of the county.

Replacing the previous league associations (Cheltenham & Gloucester, the Cotswolds, Leadon Vale, and Stroud District), the GYCL will run alongside the existing Gloucestershire Youth Cricket League County-Wide to provide opportunities to young cricketers in the north of the county.

A new structure for junior cricket...

Alongside the existing structure of age-group competitions, here is what is new within the GYCL North:

  • Introduction of Under-7 festivals, hosted by clubs from July–September, consisting primarily of game-based activities such as “5 bats.”

  • An Under-9 Foundation pairs league, available across the whole of the north of the county.
  • tiered competition structure for the Under-11, Under-13, and Under-15 leagues, to differentiate cricketing abilities and reduce the likelihood of one-sided fixtures:
    • Foundation: Focused on maximising participation and providing opportunities for as many juniors as possible to play organised cricket at an entry level.
    • Participation: Competitive leagues at an intermediate level, aimed at supporting skill development and player progression.
    • Performance: Competitive leagues for clubs with players of higher ability, providing a platform for advanced match experience and culminating in finals days.
  • Scheduled match days: Each age group will have a designated match day in the week.
  • Leagues will be organised geographically to keep travel to a minimum, using the former districts as a guide when grouping clubs.
  • We will encourage clubs to play in coloured kits rather than traditional whites, although this will not be mandatory.

Players prefer digital scoring...

Our Youth Survey gathered the views of young players and their responses told us how they love it when games are scored digitally.  Players cited how…

“I can look back to see my scores and progress after the match, it also helps with GCSE PE!  I have a record of all my stats and also my family can follow if they aren’t there.”

Play-Cricket’s scoring app is free to download on mobile and tablet devices, really easy to use and will save volunteers time.  In addition, it has all the detail of a traditional scoresheet and is perfect for those new to scoring, and powerful enough for regular scorers.

Andrew Moss / League & Competitions Officer

Andrew joined the GCF in October 2025 and is responsible for organising and coordinating several Leagues and Competitions within Gloucestershire. This is the first time the GCF has had a Leagues and Competitions Officer, aligning with the Foundation’s plan to bring ‘Open’ Junior Cricket for the areas of Cheltenham & Gloucester, Stroud, Leadon Vale, and The Cotswolds, in-house.

In addition to the new ‘Gloucestershire Youth Cricket League’ offering, Andrew will lead on the existing GYCL competitions, as well as the County Cup and Trophy.

With experience in Sports Performance Analysis and Sports Operations, Andrew also works part-time for CricViz, where he provides the ECB with official scoring and performance data for the domestic English cricket season. His analytical background brings an organised and detailed approach to GCF, helping to align the playing calendar across all relevant competitions.
