Openers take centre stage again for Glo’shire O70s

THE record-breaking partnership of John Evans and Keith Daniels has been at it again for Gloucestershire Over 70s.

Fresh from sharing an England and Wales seniors record unbroken stand of 326 last month against Wales, the opening duo guided Gloucestershire to a ten-wicket home victory against Devon at Frocester.

Evans (pictured right) led the chase to a target of 180 on his home ground with an unbeaten 110 compiled from 97 balls (14 fours, two sixes) while Stroud stalwart Daniels reached 55 as the points were banked with almost 14 overs to spare.

Devon, who lost the toss, were restricted to 179-8 by Howard Johnson (4-33) and Dick Tugwell (3-30, both from nine) ahead of the home side completing win number eight of a fine season.

The O60s’ home date against local rivals Somerset fell victim to the weather, but the O60s third XI overcame neighbours Worcestershire by eight wickets at Westbury-on-Severn.

Gloucestershire, who won the toss, pegged back their visitors to a total of 148-9, Ian Martin (3-21) and Andy Malpas (2-32) the pick of the attack.

Opener Simon Mezsaros (48), Andy Taylor (37 not) and Martin (34 not) then chipped away at the target.

The O60s seconds, though, could not complete the double against Worcestershire as they went down to a six-wicket reverse at Birlingham.

Andy Macleod (41) was the only batter to settle in a below-par total of 119 which Worcestershire reached with seven overs to spare, Mike Pearson’s eight overs costing only 19 runs.
