On August 14, 2024- The Seat Unique Stadium played host to a day of celebration and recognition as the Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation (GCF) held its annual Cricket Collective Awards. The event honoured the tireless efforts of volunteers from across the county, highlighting the invaluable contributions they make to the sport and their communities.
Volunteers enjoyed a day at the Metro Bank One Day Cup, where they were able to enjoy the cricket action, also the company of other volunteers and trustees of the Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation (GCF). After the awards, nominees and winners sat down for food, offering everyone the opportunity to share experiences, exchange ideas, and passion for cricket.
Gareth Dawson, Workforce Development Officer for the Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation, reflected on the day, saying,
“Today has given us a chance to celebrate and recognise those individuals who do so much to drive cricket forward in the county. Volunteers are the heartbeat of our cricket community and they deserve to be in the spotlight. A big thank you must go out to the county cricket club who we have worked in partnership with to host the event”.
The awards spanned a variety of categories, each one celebrating a different area of dedication and innovation within Gloucestershire’s cricketing community.
The Cricket Collective Inspired to Play 2024 Winner – Russell Fry
Russell Fry was honoured for his ground-breaking work in making cricket accessible to individuals with disabilities. Through his innovative strategy, termed “inclusive cricket,” Russell has not only opened the sport to new audiences but also built a dedicated coaching team that runs year-round sessions. In addition to his work with inclusive cricket, Russell coaches an under-11 squad and plays a vital role in the Coaching & Development team at Golden Hill, helping young players transition into adult cricket.
The Cricket Collective Rising Star Award 2024 Winner – Leni-Rae Readman
Young volunteer Leni-Rae Readman was recognized as a rising star for her unwavering commitment to Bristol United Banks CC. Having started her cricket journey as an AllStars participant, Leni-Rae has continued to support the club by assisting in both indoor and outdoor sessions for the AllStars group. Her dedication to nurturing the youngest members of the club has made her an integral part of the community.
The Cricket Collective Safe Hands Award 2024 Winner – Katie Medhurst
Katie Medhurst, who stepped into the role of Club Safeguarding Officer (CSO) this spring, was awarded for her transformative work in safeguarding. Katie introduced comprehensive new policies, improved communication, and implemented practical solutions like coach identification lanyards. Her efforts have not only enhanced the club’s approach to safeguarding but also brought a much-needed female perspective to the role.
The Cricket Collective Game Changer 2024 Winner – Seb Vamplew
At just 17, Seb Vamplew has become an indispensable part of Winterbourne Cricket Club. His involvement spans playing, coaching, and ground management. Between his studies, Seb dedicates nearly every day to the club, coaching younger players and maintaining the grounds. His commitment has made him a respected figure within the club, inspiring younger members and contributing significantly to the club’s success.
Volunteer Grounds Management Team of the Year 2024 – Chipping Sodbury CC
Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club’s volunteer grounds team was celebrated for their decade-long commitment to supporting Gloucestershire Girls County Age Group. Their work ensures top-quality facilities, creating a thriving environment for young female cricketers. The team’s efforts have also included creating female-only changing facilities, reflecting the club’s commitment to equity in the sport.
The Cricket Collective Tackling Climate Change 2024 Winner – Down Hatherley CC
Down Hatherley Cricket Club was recognised for their proactive approach to environmental sustainability. The club’s initiatives, including installing solar panels, tree planting, and reducing energy consumption, have set a standard for environmentally conscious cricket clubs. Their commitment to becoming plastic-free and further reducing their carbon footprint underscores their leadership in tackling climate change.
The Cricket Collective Unsung Hero 2024 Winner – Guy Stirling Lee
Guy Stirling Lee was honoured for his extraordinary contributions to Dumbleton Cricket Club’s women and girls’ section. Under his guidance, the program has grown from modest beginnings to include multiple teams with over 60 players. Guy’s dedication to coaching and mentoring has created a thriving community for women and girls in cricket, making him a valued figure in Gloucestershire’s cricketing landscape.
The Metro Bank Champion of Girls Cricket 2024 Winner – Paul Maggs
Paul Maggs, Head of Youth at Quedgeley & Hardwicke Cricket Club, was recognized for his exceptional work in expanding opportunities for girls in cricket. Under his leadership, the number of girls in the youth section has grown from five to over 60 in just two years. Paul’s efforts have not only strengthened his own club but have also made a significant impact on girls’ cricket across the county.
The Cricket Collective Lifetime Achiever 2024 Winner – Len Attard
Finally, the Lifetime Achiever Award was presented to Len Attard for his two decades of service to Gloucestershire County Seniors cricket. Len’s contributions as an administrator, committee member, and player have been foundational to the club’s history and ongoing success. His dedication to organizing tours, events, and fixtures has made him a cornerstone of the community.
The Cricket Collective Awards 2024 highlighted the incredible impact of volunteers who continue to inspire, innovate, and lead within Gloucestershire’s cricketing community.
The day was a resounding success, All who attended left with a renewed appreciation for the volunteers who make cricket in Gloucestershire so special.
