On Friday, 11th October, over 120 women from across the Gloucestershire cricket network gathered at the Bristol Pavilion to celebrate a remarkable year of cricket at the Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation (GCF) Women’s Recreational Awards Night. The evening was hosted by the fantastic Melissa Story, who guided us through a night filled with celebration and recognition. The night was not only a chance to celebrate individual and team achievements but also a time to reflect on the incredible growth of women’s cricket across the county in 2024.
All in attendance were treated to a delicious meal, great company, and a look back at some impressive numbers from the season. This year saw 64 outdoor teams competing, with over 600 women taking to the field during the summer months. That is not all—our indoor competitions were also buzzing with activity, featuring 40 teams and more than 350 women playing cricket all year round. These numbers are a testament to the ever-growing popularity and inclusivity of women’s cricket in Gloucestershire.
From new teams making their debut this year to seasoned teams that have been part of the journey since day one, the evening offered a chance for all to come together and celebrate their shared love for the game. The awards acknowledged division winners and outstanding individual performers from both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Yet, the night was about more than just trophies—it was a celebration of the game and the progress made together.
Laura Charles-Price, Head of Women and Girls at Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation, expressed her gratitude, saying:
“It’s amazing to see how much women’s cricket has grown across Gloucestershire. This growth wouldn’t be possible without the drive of our incredible clubs who continue to do more and more each year, supporting opportunities for women to play and improve. A special thank you goes out to the dedicated volunteers who prepare wickets, score and umpire matches, and, of course, to our brilliant committee who tirelessly work behind the scenes to ensure the game’s success. But most of all, we are grateful to the wonderful women who show up, week in and week out, and make this game what it is.”
Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation would like to extend our appreciation to Melissa Story for hosting the night, to Martin Berrill for their support as one of our key partners, providing the awards at lightning speed! and to the entire staff at Bristol Pavilion for their exceptional hospitality throughout the evening.
As the 2024 outdoor season ends, we look ahead to the exciting indoor league action starting in January 2025. But for now, we encourage everyone to enjoy a well-earned rest after an incredible year of cricket. Thank you for being part of this amazing journey—and here’s to even more growth, success, and celebration in the year to come!
