For the second week running, WEPL Premier One new boys Dumbleton suffered an agonising one-wicket defeat. And just like last week against Burbage & Easton Royal, it went to the final ball of the game before they were beaten.
This time, it was Bristol who were the victors in a remarkable game that saw more than 680 runs scored. Dumbleton, who posted 342-5, were the favourites going into the final over with the visitors needing 16 to win with the final pair at the wicket.
But Ash Lakhani had other ideas, hitting a six and two fours before getting a leg bye from the final delivery. Lakhani finished on 49 from 33 balls after Kamran Dhariwal had hit a masterful 147 from 97 balls with 12 fours and 10 sixes. Earlier, Dan Holland (98) and Lewis Rollinson (91) had shared in an opening partnership of 199 for Dumbleton.
Peter Trego took 5-37 and then made 58 as Burbage & Easton Royal, chasing Bedminster’s 250-9, eased to a five-wicket victory.
Trego shared in an opening partnership of 119 with William Tripcony, who made a run-a-ball 104, while earlier, Joe Millard, batting at eight, smashed an unbeaten 84 from 52 balls for Bedminster.
Manelker De Silva made 134 from 93 balls for Potterne but couldn’t prevent his side from slipping to a 39-run defeat to Midsomer Norton, who made 305. Ben Privett was the pick of Midsomer Norton’s bowlers with 4-43.
Opening bat Chris Gibson made 102 as Thornbury reached 283 against Frocester, who were then dismissed for 209 with Harry Wormwell (4-18) and Jack Worgan (4-37) the most successful of the bowlers.
Taunton Deane won a thriller in Premier 2 Bristol/Somerset, beating Downend by one run after posting 235.
Opening batter Harry Smith made 147 of those, with extras the next highest contributor with 20.
Downend looked very well placed at 193-3, but when Masoor Khan fell for 85, the wickets started to tumble with Sam Burgess claiming the final one in the 45th over.
An unbeaten 107 by wicketkeeper Khayyam Khan helped Clevedon to a five-wicket win over Congresbury after the visitors had made 225-7, while an unbeaten 106 by skipper Jordan Smith helped Lansdown to 271-6 and a 27-run win over Twyford House.
Louis Kraucamp (101 not out) also played a captain’s innings as Taunton St Andrews chased down Weston-super-Mare’s 220 all out with five wickets to spare.
Cheltenham squeezed home by two wickets and with two balls remaining at Goatacre in Premier 2 Glos/Wilts after the home side had made 272-9.
Opening bat Toby Horton top-scored with 83 for Goatacre, while captain James Boyle led the charge for Cheltenham with 74 from 64 balls.
Opening batter Reece Morris thumped 143 from just 89 balls – 13 fours and 11 sixes – as Painswick chased down Chipping Sodbury’s 262-5 with six wickets and 18.2 overs remaining.
Earlier, Jiwanjot Singh had compiled an unbeaten 106 for Chipping Sodbury.
Hatherley and Redings skipper Tom Hage took 5-38 with his left-arm pace as Royal Wootton Bassett were dismissed for 265, 19 runs short of Hatherley’s 284-9 with Henry Driver-Dickerson top-scoring with 86 and Gloucestershire white-ball captain Jack Taylor, batting at three, making 68.
Jeremy Bond snapped up 5-30 as Tewkesbury were dismissed for 183 by Marshfield, and Bond was the batting hero for the visitors, too, with an unbeaten 43, sharing in an unbroken eighth-wicket partnership of 66 with Frank Akankwasa.
Number 11 Fin Clancy hit three runs from the only ball he faced to earn Knowle a nerve-jangling one-wicket win over Downend 2nd XI in Bristol and North Somerset.
The home side had earlier been dismissed for 145 in 31.5 overs with Colin Archibald claiming 5-43.
Lawrence Cook took 5-22 as Bristol West Indian Phoenix were bowled out for 140 in reply to Bishopton’s 242-9, for whom Arnold Otwani top-scored with 66.
Yeovil batter William Chesterman fell two short of his century against Frome in the Somerset Division, but he was still the star turn as his side chased down the home team’s 243 with seven wickets and more than 10 overs to spare.
Scott Montgomery made 127 from 116 balls, including 14 fours and eight sixes, but he couldn’t prevent Gloucester from going down to an 82-run defeat in the Gloucestershire Division against Aston Ingham, who had posted 265-8, with Oliver Henson and Anthony James both contributing 79.
An unbeaten 91 by captain and opening bat George Bailey helped Hawkesbury to a five-wicket win over Cheltenham 2nds, who made 230-8, while an innings of 84 from 75 balls by Sam Groves set up Chipping Campden’s 44-run win over Langford, who were dismissed for 195.
A remarkable unbeaten 95 from just 43 balls by Harry Robbins propelled Trowbridge to the unlikeliest of one-wicket wins in the Wiltshire Division.
Chasing Corsham 2nds’ 262 all out, he arrived at the crease with his side on 142-7. At one stage, they’d been 67-5, but Robbins smashed seven fours and eight sixes, sharing in a last-wicket partnership of 61 with Daniel Tallentire, who made 14. Robbins hit the last two balls of the game for six.
Earlier, opener Stuart MacDougall had compiled 106 for Corsham.
Sebastian Lauderdale-Smith made 101 as Swindon chased down Westbury and District’s 233 for the loss of just one wicket, while Arthur Trotman took 6-31 for Chippenham in their seven-wicket success over Burbage & Easton Royal 2nds, who were dismissed for 98.
