Gloucestershire Over 70s beat the rain and local rivals

OPENERS Keith Daniels and John Evans both hit half centuries for Gloucestershire Over 70s who claimed an 11-run win at Fairford in a rain-affected derby clash against Wiltshire.

Daniels top scored on 54, Evans reached 50 while an unbeaten 49 from Mike Pearson helped the home side total 190-3 off their 35.

In reply, Wiltshire were set a revised target of 145 off 23 because of rain, and came up just short. John Turton’s five overs cost only 21 and Geoff Eaves sent down four overs for 20, while there were wickets for Rick Carman (1-22 from five) and Pearson as Gloucestershire put the squeeze on.

The 70s 2nds, meanwhile, won an even tighter game, returning from Hertfordshire with a five-run success.

Alec Robinson’s unbeaten 58 was the highlight of the visitors’ 201-5 before Ian Bentley struck with figures of 3-47, well supported by Phil Dickenson (0-26 from seven) and Andy Howe (0-12 from five) as Herts were restricted to a reply of 196-5.

Gloucestershire Over 60s 2nd were bowled out for 101 and a five-wicket defeat away to Wales who also completed a two-wicket triumph against the 60s 3rds. Sean Walters the pick of the bowlers with a return of 2-18 from nine.

But the 60s 4ths were 45-run winners away to Herts, Keith Daniels top scoring on 68 and Andy Howe capturing 3-24 from nine.

Gloucestershire’s new senior women’s side had a friendly against East Anglia at Tockington abandoned because of rain to the particular frustration of openers Maria Fowler and Kelly Armfield who both retired after completing half centuries.

The weather also hit an away friendly against Somerset but enough play was possible for the visitors to complete a 23-run win.

Gloucestershire reached 112-3 off 18, Maria top scoring on 33. Somerset were then set a target of 147 from 18 only to be pegged back by Lucy Wilkes (0-7) and Clare Caudle-Stephens (0-12, both from four).
