Skipper Martin shines for treble-chasing Dumbleton

DUMBLETON continued their quest for a remarkable trophy treble with a 79-run victory away to Bishopston in the First Class Comms Gloucestershire Cup.

Captain Ross Martin (79) and Dan Holland (73) shared an opening stand of 158 as the visitors reached 253-7, Lawrence Cook taking 3-44.

And Martin followed up with a haul of 5-45 from eight as Bish came up short despite a gutsy unbeaten 74 from home captain Dave O’Brien.

The win puts Dumbleton into the last four of the county cup where they face a trip to Chipping Sodbury.

With five rounds of games to go, Dumbleton are also top of WEPL’s Premier Two Glos/Wilts division with a healthy 21-point lead.

And on Sunday, Martin will skipper his side in a Voneus Village Cup semi-final trip to Stayley, of Cheshire, as Dumbleton bid to reach a Lord’s final for the third time in four years.

Sodbury, meanwhile, booked their place in the last four of the county cup with a 35-run success away to Bedminster.

Jiwanjot Singh’s unbeaten 134 off 106 (18 fours, one six) helped power Sodbury to 244-3 after losing the toss while the home side, in reply, lost wickets at regular intervals, opener Joe Shean top scoring on 86 from 89.

In the other half of the draw, it will be Downend against Hatherley & Reddings for a place in the final.

Downend progressed with a five-wicket victory away to Pak Bristolians who totalled 150-9 after winning the toss, Izatullah Stankzai inflicting the damage with a figures of 5-35 from eight.

The visitors were on the back foot in reply at 34-2 but opener Maz Khan took charge with an unbeaten 83.

Hatherley booked their place in the semi-finals with a 20-run success away to Bristol West Indian Phoenix.

Captain Tom Hage’s unbeaten 71 helped lift the visitors to 190-7 before BWIP were pegged back by Max Kelly (4-30).

The First Class Comms Gloucestershire Trophy final, meanwhile, will be between holders Gloucester AIW and Cirencester at Poulton on Sunday August 17.

AIW went through courtesy of a 150-run triumph at Apperley, Shaheer Raja (71 not) and opener Ali Khalid (68) finding form while there were also three wickets apiece for Kaihaan Zakhil and Vasif Muzavar.

APPERLEY are through to the group final of the ECB Girls U15 Club T20 after easing past Cheltenham by seven wickets.

Sophie Compton claimed 3-16 and Lucy Bull 2-3 as Cheltenham were dismissed for just 33 ahead of Apperley completing a comfortable win.

They will now be away on Sunday August 10 to Exeter for a place in finals day.

BRISTOL went down to a 73-run defeat at Exeter in the regional final of the ECB U15 Club T20.

The home side reached 163-4 after winning the toss before Bristol were dismissed in reply for 90, Alex Hutchison top scoring on 23.
