Rain Wrecks Opening Weekend of Bristol & District League Season

Stoke Bishop were one of the few teams to pick up a win in the Bristol and District League on an opening day that was decimated by the weather. They overcame Bristol Lions by nine wickets in the Fifth Division after bowling them out for 73 in 24.1 overs.

Adam Searle claimed 5-19 in his six overs, while Ted Steer took 3-10 in five before Stoke Bishop knocked off the runs in just eight overs.

Every game in the top five divisions was abandoned, but Bristol New Eleven managed to get over the line in the Sixth Division, overcoming Bristol Eagles by 42 runs.

Bristol New Eleven made 190 thanks in large part to their numbers eight and nine, Suresh and Shan Thomas, who made 42 and 40 not out respectively.

Bristol Eagles made a solid start to their reply and at one stage were 84-2 but they then lost wickets steadily with Chacko Varghese picking up 4-9 in three overs.

Bishop Sutton were the only winners in Eighth Division East, beating Bristol Aces 2nds by two wickets in a low-scoring game in which Bristol Aces wicketkeeper Selbin George was the only batter to make more than 22, scoring 64 from 43 balls.

Claverham (Yatton) charged to a nine-wicket victory in Eighth Division West after bowling out Barrow Gurney for 70 in 26 overs.

Steven Raymond was the most successful of the bowlers with 3-15 before the batters knocked off the runs in 8.4 overs.

Hampset 3rds enjoyed a similarly comfortable win in Ninth Division East.  They bowled out Bristol United Banks 2nds for 60 with Kit Pearson returning 5-10 from his eight overs.

Hampset then reached their target inside 12 overs for the loss of just one wicket.

Hallen triumphed by 103 runs over Golden Hill 7ths in a rain-affected game in Ninth Division West.

An excellent unbroken ninth-wicket partnership of 110 between Matt Curnock (47 from 48 balls) and Elliott Gibbons (60 from 44) enabled captain Ray Johnston to declare on 164-8, and then their bowlers ensured that Golden Hill were always well adrift of the required run rate.
